Endowed With Power
The Manifestation of Spiritual Gifts
Friday we celebrated the 4th of July. I had been thinking about the great freedom we experience as Americans. Remember being American is secondary. We are Christians first. We have greater reason to boast in our Savior, than in our country. The freedom we experience as followers of Jesus Christ is exceedingly more precious than our national freedom. It is also superior to an indescribable degree. When our national freedom becomes extinct, (it may in our lifetime) our Christ given freedom will persist.
John 8:36 (ESV)
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
An area I would like to see developed in our congregation is an increased knowledge and practice of our spiritual gifts. Two reasons for this study;
1. The Exaltation of Jesus Christ
2. The Edification of the Body of Christ
Writing in the context of freedom here is significant. In the expression of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, I would like to promote a freedom to practice these Spirit controlled gifts in the context of our congregation and our culture, Biblically. Along with freedom comes great responsibility. So I want to emphasize true freedom in the practice of Spiritual gifts but at the same time I want to ban its counterfeit “ecstatic frenzy”. I have no desire to work our people up into an emotional state of ecstasy and blame it on the Holy Spirit when in reality it is the excrement of our carnal nature.
Therefore, rather than preaching topically on Spiritual Gifts, these messages will be expositional and with your help saturated in study and prayer. It is up to the Holy Spirit to pour out supernatural power on our people in these days. We must earnestly pray that He does. It is our responsibility to be ready and expectant desiring Christ exalted and His people edified. We will begin by working through 1 Corinthians 12, with an introduction to the Person and Work of God the Holy Spirit.

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. [2] You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. [3] Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

How are such mighty works done by his hands? [3] Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
Luke 21:13-15 (ESV)

What is your part?
Intro: Start with Jesus, Then the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit gives gifts to Empower His people for the Ministry of Jesus. What is your part?
In this teaching on Spiritual Gifts in our day 2 extremes
We have to weigh and set aside for a biblical understanding and application.
* God can’t do these things anymore
* God must do something
We want to be a healthy church. The use of these spiritual gifts biblically will be healthy.
Again the reason for the Study and application of these Gifts;
*The Exaltation of Jesus Christ
*The Edification of the Body of Christ
3. Faith
“The ability to envision what needs to be done and trust God to accomplish it even though it seems impossible to most people”
You are the People who trust, have faith, believe, have hope. When most people give up on, person, circumstance plan whatever it might be. You’re all “no keep trusting it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna get better, things will change. You’re confident in god’s promises for His people.

Paul Acts 27:
I have faith in God
Mary a life of Faith
Hebrews 11
Do you view Obstacles as opportunities?
Do you boast about the power of God and what you’ve seen Him do?
Do You Get Motivated by new ministries?
Opposed to anyone who expresses that something can’t be done?
Do others come to you when they face insurmountable odds?
Do you have an effective prayer ministry?
4. Healing
“The ability to call on God to heal the sick by supernatural means for the purpose of revealing God”
God is healer you the tool in God’s hand, through the means of intercession, prayer.
Careful here, there is massive misuse or false claim by people who don’t have this Holy Spirit controlled Gift.
But there are legitimate gifts and ministries of healing. Where, His people trust that God can heal the sick and pray in faith for the physical restoration of those in need.
They see healing as a sign that God uses to reveal His power to people so that many would come to salvation in Christ. Because, the point of this gift in the Body of Christ is not just physical wellness but wholeness, mind, body, emotion spiritual life restored to health.
Not healing every time they ask God, God is the one who heals, we believe in the Absolute Sovereignty of God. He heals according to His purpose. We must also recognize when He chooses not to heal it is according to His purpose.
Our greatest desire whether we see or experience physical healing or not is to submit to the will of God. Meaning that we may also need to pray for perseverance regarding pain and suffering for those around us or even in our own lives.
Jesus’ ex. Of these Gift
Matthew 4:23-24 (ESV)
And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. [24] So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them.
Matthew 9:35 (ESV)
And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.
Ex. Of Others with Gift
Jesus’ Disciples
Matthew 10:1 (ESV)
And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.
Luke 10:1-12 (ESV)
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go
Peter Acts 5
Paul experienced healing in His ministry
James 5
Some will be healed.
Common errors;
Some say healings ceased – no scriptural evidence
Historically the church has experienced healing gifts
Not necessarily under a healer, fake testimonies
Testified and verified
Not necessarily a part of a service, can be done any where,
Error! No medical attention! Who wrote the book of acts? Nowhere are we prescribed in scripture not to seek medical attention for sickness. If you are healed,See the doctor, verify for the glory of God. Go to the Doctor and pray to the great. Phys
Error! Faithful believers never get sick, w/ that they get rich
Error! If you prayed or were prayed for and were not healed you did not have enough faith.
People who love God and have faith get sick.
Apaphradites, Timothy, Paul
Questions concerning this gift:
Do you have a deep compassion for people who are sick?
Do you have a deep conviction that God can heal anyone?
Do you love praying for people who are sick and are therefore drawn to them?
Have you seen God heal someone?
Are you excited because it shows the power and majesty of Jesus?
Do you long for the Kingdom of God to come when everyone will be healed?
* Demonic oppression, supernatural imposing itself upon the physical.
God gives the gift to some people, not everyone. There is a discerning, healthy skepticism that we must apply when we encounter self proclaimed healers. There are so many counterfeits.
We do believe God gives this gift today, testify and verify, it’s biblical.

Intro: To answer the question;
What would be the purpose of miracles today?
5. Miracles
Definition: The ability to call on God to do supernatural acts to reveal His Power
Miracles by definition do not happen all the time
Demons cast out
Nature obeying God’s authority
The dead being raised
The Sovereignty of God
A. People who have this Gift to not chase signs and wonders, they do expect signs wonders and miracles to follow GOD’S people.
Jesus and Miracles
John 20:30-31 (ESV)
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; [31] but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
1. To prove Jesus is God
Acts 2:22 (ESV)
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—
Jesus commanded nature
Walked on water
Water into wine
Raises the dead
Feeding 5000
Acts 2:42-47 (ESV)
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. [43] And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. [44] And all who believed were together and had all things in common. [45] And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. [46] And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, [47] praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
2. The Apostles
Acts 6:8-10 (ESV)
And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. [9] Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen. [10] But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.
3. Stephen
Acts 19:11-12 (ESV)
And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, [12] so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.
4. Paul Acts 19
OT Moses, Elijah, Elisha
Common errors
Exalt themselves rather than God
Luke 11:29 (ESV)
When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.
Some people just want miracles and not Jesus
Do you have this gift?
Do you believe that God is the God of the supernatural, anything could happen?
When you read accounts of miracles in the Bible do you get super excited?
Have you seen someone freed from demonic oppression?
Have you seen God do miracles?
Do you use the miraculous accounts of Jesus to point people to Him?
It is a miracle when people become Christians
Our Marriage is a miracle
Acts 2:16-21 (ESV)
But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
[17] ” ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
[18] even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
[19] And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
[20] the sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
[21] And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
God Does miracles through His People today!
Acts 4:29-31 (ESV)
And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, [30] while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” [31] And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
B. Why were signs and wonders pleaded for by the early church along side the greatest preachers that ever lived.
The Bible teaches that the gospel preached is the power of God unto salvation (Rom. 1:16; 1 Cor. 1:23). It also teaches that the demand for signs in the presence of God’s word is the mark of an evil and adulterous generation (Matt. 16:4; 1 Cor. 1:22). But the Bible also says that Paul and Barnabas “remained a long time [in Iconium] speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands” (Acts 14:3; cf. Heb. 2:4; Mark 16:20). So signs and wonders were God’s attesting witness to the spoken word of the gospel.
Could we not then say, in putting all this together, that signs and wonders function in relation to the word of God, as striking, wakening, channels for the self-authenticating glory of Christ in the gospel? Signs and wonders do not save. They do not transform the heart. Only the glory of Christ seen in the gospel has the power to do that (2 Cor. 3:18-4:6). But evidently, God chooses at times to use signs and wonders along side his regenerating word to win a hearing and to shatter the shell of disinterest and cynicism and false religion, and help the fallen heart fix its gaze on the gospel
Acts is to give us great accounts for the exaltation of Jesus Christ and the Good of His people. The edification of the body of Christ.
Acts 5:12-16 (ESV)
Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. [13] None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. [14] And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, [15] so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. [16] The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
short comment
It is perfectly clear that in New Testament times, the gospel was authenticated in this way by signs, wonders and miracles of various characters and descriptions . . . Was it only meant to be true of the early church? . . . The Scriptures never anywhere say that these things were only temporary—never! There is no such statement anywhere. (The Sovereign Spirit, pp. 31-32)
[We] can produce a number of converts, thank God for that, and that goes on regularly in evangelical churches every Sunday. But the need today is much too great for that. The need today is for an authentication of God, of the supernatural, of the spiritual, of the eternal, and this can only be answered by God graciously hearing our cry and shedding forth again his Spirit upon us and filling us as he kept filling the early church. (Joy Unspeakable, p. 278)
What is needed is some mighty demonstration of the power of God, some enactment of the Almighty, that will compel people to pay attention, and to look, and to listen . . . That is why I am urging you to pray for this. When God acts, he can do more in a minute than man with his organizing can do in fifty years. (Revival, pp. 121-122)
It is perfectly clear that in New Testament times, the gospel was authenticated in this way by signs, wonders and miracles of various characters and descriptions … Was it only meant to be true of the early church? … The Scriptures never anywhere say that these things were only temporary—never! There is no such statement anywhere (see note 44).
C. Needed: A sovereign out pouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church.
Let us together decide to beseech him, to plead with him to do this again. Not that we may have the experience or the excitement, but that his mighty hand may be known and his great name may be glorified and magnified among the people (see note 93).
Prayer/offering/announcements/Benediction
Acts 4:29-31 (ESV)

1. The Apostles as Foundation of the Church
Ephes. 2:19-22 (ESV)
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, [20] built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, [21] in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. [22] In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

EX.
2 Cor. 8:23 (ESV)
As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker for your benefit. And as for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ.
Apostle on the other hand is our focus today so we will go into more descriptive distinctions.
Distinctions: Those whom He Personally Called to establish His Church and to spread the Gospel
Acts 1:13
13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James.
It was characteristic of the Apostles and necessary;
(1) that they should have seen the Lord, and been able to testify of him and of his resurrection from personal knowledge (John 15:27; Acts 1:21, 22; 1Co 9:1; Acts 22:14, 15).
(2.) They must have been immediately called to that office by Christ (Luke 6:13; Gal 1:1).
(3.) It was essential that they should be infallibly inspired, and thus secured against all error and mistake in their public teaching, whether by word or by writing (John 14:26; John 16:13; 1Th 2:13).
(4.) Another qualification was the power of working miracles (Mark 16:20; Acts 2:43; 1Co 12:8-11). The apostles therefore could have had no successors. They are the only authoritative teachers of the Christian doctrines. The office of an apostle ceased with its first holders.

Luke 6:12-16 (ESV)
In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. [13] And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles: [14] Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, [15] and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, [16] and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
3. Role of the Apostle
The Apostles were sent out directly by the Risen Christ on a specific Apostolic mission.
2 Cor. 3:4-6 (ESV)
Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. [5] Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, [6] who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
They were messengers of the New Covenant
Message not only to the Jews but the Gentiles.
4. Distinctions and similarities between Old Testament Prophet and New Testament Apostle
The Most significant similarity between the Old Testament Prophet and the Apostle in the New Testament, through them we have the Word of God. Which is absolute Divine Authority.
Agents of divine revelation
Unique access to totally accurate revelation from God.
5. Are there Apostle’s in the church Today? Controversy and Clarity
1 Cor. 15:3-11 (ESV)
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, [4] that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, [5] and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. [6] Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. [7] Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. [8] Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. [9] For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. [10] But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. [11] Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
6. Comparing the roles of Old Testament Prophet, The Apostle, The New Testament Prophet
C. NT prophets
[7] To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. [8] To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, [9] to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, [10] to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

Under biblical authority
We Test
1 Thess 5 Do not treat with contempt
Test all things reject what is evil cling to what is good
Prophecies examined by leadership according to scripture.
What is prophecy?
1. Forth telling – Preaching
1 Cor. 14:4-6 (ESV)
The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. [5] Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
[6] Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
Teaching word of instruction
1 Cor. 14:12 (ESV)
So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
Practical purpose
1 Cor. 14:24-25 (ESV)
But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, [25] the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.
Preaching – prophesying the word of God to His people
1 Cor. 14:12 (ESV)
So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
2. Fore telling – the future
A word telling of a future event to prepare for. For the benefit of the Church.
God knows all things Past present and future
Agibus and the Famine
Acts 11:27-30 (ESV)
Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. [28] And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius). [29] So the disciples determined, everyone according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea. [30] And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.
3. Private word of prophecy
Acts 21:10-14 (ESV)
While we were staying for many days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. [11] And coming to us, he took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘This is how the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’ “ [12] When we heard this, we and the people there urged him not to go up to Jerusalem. [13] Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be imprisoned but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” [14] And since he would not be persuaded, we ceased and said, “Let the will of the Lord be done.”
This is more often used
The practice of prophecy in the Church
1 Cor. 14:29-33 (ESV)
Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. [30] If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent. [31] For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, [32] and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. [33] For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.
As in all the churches of the saints,
a. 2-3 prophets speak
“Let two or three prophets speak”
b. Others weigh carefully what is spoken
“let the others weigh what is said.”
What authority do we weigh by? The Word of God, OT Prophets and the Apostles.
The gift of prophecy is lesser than, subservient to, secondary under the authority of Prophets and Apostles.
1 Thes. 5:19-21 (ESV)
Do not quench the Spirit. [20] Do not despise prophecies, [21] but test everything; hold fast what is good.
c. Prophecy in turn – take turns
“[31] For you can all prophesy one by one,”
d. Instruction and encouragement
“so that all may learn and all be encouraged,”
e. Subject to the control of the prophets
[32] and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.
f. Subject to God’s order
[33] For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.
Benediction:
1 Thes. 5:23 (ESV)
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7. Discerning of spirits
I. Discernment – generally speaking
A. To make a decision about
B. Recognize a difference between
C. To divide between
D. To make a judgment about
“it is the duty of every Christian to think biblically about all areas of life so that they might act biblically in all areas of life.” (Tim Challies)
II. Spiritual Discernment – 1 Corinthians 2
A. Discernment depends on making a judgments about the content of a message 1-5
1. Paul preaches truth
2. The truth is the content in his message
B. The Content is spiritual 6-11
1. Revelation from God
2. Through His Spirit
C. God’s Spirit teaches this content concerning Christ to His people 12-16
1. The Spirit from God
2. Who teaches Content from God
3. Only understood/discerned by spiritual people
4. Those who have the mind of Christ
Now, the purpose for that exposition making judgments concerning spiritual gifts and specifically making judgments about spirits.
D. Discerning spiritual gifts 1 Corinthians 12:1-3
1. Ignorance = misapplication
2. Understanding = exaltation on Christ, edification of the Church
There are some in the church that God the Holy Spirit has especially gifted with the ability to distinguish between spirits.
III. Discerning of spirits – the ability to distinguish between spirits
Some content for discerning spirits
1 John 4:1-6 (ESV)
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. [2] By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, [3] and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. [4] Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. [5] They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. [6] We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
. Discerning of spirit’s for the exaltation of Jesus Christ
. Discerning of spirits for the edification of the Body of Christ.
Hebrews 4:12-13 (ESV)
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. [13] And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Where does the effective power come from to distinguish between spirits?
It is the word of God that is authoritative, not my fallen understanding.
1 Tim. 4:1 (ESV)
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
Why is this gift so important in the church?
Exposing the enemy
Exalting Jesus Christ
Edifying the believers
A few Biblical examples of the ability to distinguish between spirits
False prophets oppose the truth
Elymus the magician with Sergius Paulus proconsul who summoned Paul and Barnabas
Acts 13:9-11 (ESV)
But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him [10] and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? [11] And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand.
There are even now many antichrist’s
How will you know, how will they be identified and exposed?
Acts 16:16-18 (ESV)
As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. [17] She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” [18] And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.
Spiritually they could smell the foul spirit, the spirit in this girl was not praising God for the work He was doing through these men, it was mocking, it was antagonistic toward Christ and His people. The ability to discern between spirits revealed the demon that possessed this girl. God in the name of Jesus Christ set her free.
Can you see the purpose of this Gift played out here?
In a corporate setting
As in all the churches of the saints,
Lenski
“Certain difficult cases occur, for which more than common Christian discernment is necessary. False prophets love to use deceptive language. For the purpose of unmasking these prophets the Lord provides this gift and thus enables his church to turn from lying spirits to the one Spirit of truth.”
Apostasy – is how close to each of us.
Where is your trust/ what is the foundation of that faith?
How has it been revealed?
Have you been enabled by the Spirit of God to lay your life in the hands of Jesus Christ, who came in the flesh died and rose again.
Benediction:
1 Thes. 5:23 (ESV)
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Various kinds of tongues and the interpretation of tongues
1 Cor. 12:7-11 (ESV)
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. [11] All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
The gifts we are to learn about at the end of this particular section of spiritual gifts, happen to be the most controversial. There is a reason for that, I believe there has been a failure. Not of Pentecostals, Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, or any other Christian denomination. It isn’t denominations that are the trouble in this case, the controversy has touched each of them at one point or another. Where there is controversy on this point, the failure has been in understanding and the application of this text, 1 Corinthians.
The gift of tongues and the interpretation of tongues, placed at the end of this list. This gift among the Corinthians had been especially misused. It seems that the misuse of the gift of tongues caused disorder in the church. Rather than the edification of the Body of Christ, there was a building up of the individual self.
We must understand as we begin today, in no way does Paul discount the Gift of Tongues. No, it is a Gift of the Holy Spirit, for the endowment of (dunamis) power upon His people. Just as the previous gifts we’ve studied, these gifts are for the exaltation of Jesus Christ and the edification of the body of Christ. Therefore, the trouble is in understanding and application.
I use the strong word failure to describe this controversy because of the time it has gone on. Nearly 2000 years since Paul wrote this letter to the church of Corinth. It was a problem then and it is a problem now.
This does not need to be controversial here or anywhere else. There will be no special, new answers from me here today. Only to recognize the purpose Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthian Church, and particularly this 12th chapter.
The letter written for the purpose of correction. “The letter reveals that the Corinthian church, instead of maturing since they last heard from Paul, a remarkable number of serious problems, such as division, abuse of the Lord’s supper, disorder during worship service, theological problems, and the extremes of moral laxity and unhealthy asceticism.”
So we have 1st Corinthians and are without excuse.
Speaking in tongues, we have 1 Corinthians 12
Remember verse 1
1 Cor. 12:1 (ESV)
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
He has informed the Church therefore we are without excuse.
Let’s see what we can work out.
“To one is given through the Spirit, various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.”
I’ve already established early in this study of Spiritual gifts, I believe these gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to the Church Today. This was not just a first century phenomenon.
8. Various kinds of tongues (Languages)
Define: Languages of men and angels 1Cor.13:1
A. The evidence or an evidence
An evidence of the baptism with the Holy Spirit
Luke 3:16 (ESV)
John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
This is what we saw take place in Acts 2. We refer to this Act of God at Pentecost “The outpouring of the Holy Spirit” or to use Biblical phraseology Baptism with the Holy Spirit.
It is recorded in the scriptures here in the beginning of Acts and a few other locations in Acts. That is Biblical Church History. However through out Church History, when Christ from His throne has deemed most appropriate has baptized His people with the Holy Spirit as evidenced by revivals, reformations, and awakenings.
Throughout redemptive History these outpourings the gift of tongues has not been the initial or even necessary evidence of this Baptism. But rather various gifts, whatsoever our Sovereign Lord has determined for His glory and the good of His people. Do the research in your rich history and be amazed at God’s great power.
But again the answer to our immediate point in this study is found in this very 12th chapter of 1st Corinthians. True unity in the body of Christ is a right understanding and application of this letter.
1 Cor. 12:27-31 (ESV)
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. [28] And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. [29] Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? [30] Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? [31] But earnestly desire the higher gifts.
And I will show you a still more excellent way.
One particular gift? No, many gifts! Practiced in love.
B. Misuse of this Gift
1. Without love: selfish, prideful ambition
1 Cor. 13:1 (ESV)
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2. Without an interpreter (Congregational)
1 Cor. 14:1-25
C. The proper use of this Gift
1. In Love – consider the context
1 Cor. 13:1 (ESV)
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2. Speaking to God
1 Cor. 14:1-4 (ESV)
Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. [2] For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. [3] On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. [4] The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
3. Accompanied with an interpretation (Congregational)
4. Interpretation of tongues (Languages)
1 Cor. 14:13 (ESV)
Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret.
1 Cor. 14:26-28 (ESV)
What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. [27] If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. [28] But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.
5. Decently and in order
1 Cor. 14:39-40 (ESV)
So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. [40] But all things should be done decently and in order.
D. Sovereign Spirit 11
[11] All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
Benediction:
1 Thes. 5:23 (ESV)
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
III. The Church; One Body of Christ 12-31
1 Cor. 12:12-31 (ESV)
υμεις δε εστε σωμα χριστου
1 Cor 12:27 (Stephanus)
A. One Body One Spirit 12-13
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. [13] For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
1. The identity of the Body
a. The Church – Ephesians 5:22-32
b. His Sheep – John 10:11-18; 27-30
c. The Fathers Gift – John 17
2. The Identity of the Spirit
[13] For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
a. Sovereign Spirit – 1 Cor. 12:11
[11] All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
b. Spirit of Truth, Helper – John 14:15-17, 25- 26; 15:26-27; 16:4b-15
B. Many Parts One Body 14-20
Problem addressed at Corinth; A misconception of the unique value and function of each member.
[14] For the body does not consist of one member but of many. [15] If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.
[16] And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. [17] If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?
1. God’s sovereign authority in designing the strength of feet to uphold hands to help. 14-15
Hands are distinct from feet, in both form and function. There are certain tasks that feet can do because of their specific design that a hand cannot do. The hand is designed to perform functions feet were not intended nor are they capable to perform.
Are your feet important? Think about the design of the foot for it’s function.
Listen,
Some people in the body of Christ have a unique ability, to carry heavy and sometimes very complex weight and burdens of other members of the body of Christ. People can trust you, talk to you because your strength to bare them up is evident to them.
God has designed you, through circumstances, struggles, growth in foundational strength, and placed you here for the benefit of the other members. They may be weak at times and it will be your strength that will help them progress a little further as you walk up next to them, wrap their arm around your shoulder and bare their weight until they regain strength.
You’re like feet and the body will not function properly without you. Listen you are needed!
However with your design, strength and ability to function, you alone are not the body, but a member of the whole. All your strength and ability will not function without the other parts. This is the design of God, to find your joy and satisfaction in serving others for His Glory.
How important are your feet? Yeah, wow!
And think about the functions your hands perform everyday all day long. I’m sure we take our hands for granted.
An illustration may put things in perspective:
When I was in the shutter industry. We had a shutter guru named Ralph. Ralph had been an installer for probably 25 – 30 years. Shutter installation is a job you do with your hands. Strong hands are necessary for this job. Well about 1 ½ ago maybe 2 now. Ralph had an accident with a saw. After so many years suddenly in an inattentive moment he cut off, from the knuckle half of his thumb.
For multiple months after his accident Ralph was legitimately disabled from performing his Job. Without HALF of his THUMB, he was totally unable to install shutters. Nearly 30 years experience immediately shut down due to half a thumb. Ralph was able after some time to re-train himself with this permanent injury.
But this illustrates the point, if half a thumb plays such an important role in the functioning of the hand, how much the function of the hand as a member of the whole body.
No doubt, the Church cannot function properly without those who are specifically designed to help. I describe these people as those with a servants’ heart. Already they are willing to lend a hand before they are even asked.
Oh! Something evident about hands, that Glorifies the One their service honors most, when they help they do not look to be filled in return for their help.
I don’t mean that they don’t need help, or that they don’t ask for help. But they’re not looking for something in return for their service to others.
For you that are hands, you are appreciated here. You are needed, we depend on you. We cannot function properly without your help.
As members of the Body of Christ we are interdependent. As a hand you cannot be independent; you cannot function apart from the body. As hands you were designed by God to benefit the rest of the Body of Christ for the Glory of God.
2. God’s sovereign authority over diversity in the body of Christ for the distinct functions of eyes to see, ears to hear and noses to smell. 16-17
Oh the wonder of God, just to look here in this room with this group of people and see the diversity and then to describe you as the body of Christ.
Let me ask this, for whom did Christ die? Christ died for the elect, out of every tribe nation and tongue.
Many of you here, I don’t know where you’ve come from. The details of your life that brought you here are distinct from every other person in this room. Yet you are here, and it is God that has brought you to this place, to hear and respond to His Word.
Those of you He has effectually called and placed in the Body of Christ. You were a unique choice placed in the body to perform a unique function that His Spirit has specifically gifted you for.
The eye was designed to perform a certain function. The unique capabilities God has gifted you with cannot be effectively performed by another member of the body of Christ. You will not be able to effectively perform a function the Holy Spirit did not call or gift you for.
There are some members of the Body He has given the unique ability to effectively oversee the church. To carefully see and regulate what comes into, goes on in and goes out of the church.
Though the eye should be hospitable, he is not to put the majority of his efforts toward the ministry of hospitality, because God has uniquely gifted say, the ear to be most effective in hospitality. Though the ear is to always be willing to give an answer for their faith, it may be the nose the Spirit has especially gifted for evangelism. Rather than each wishing for the gift of the other, emphasis must be on perfecting/maturing in each his own gift to become a more effective whole The body of Christ. Each member plays a vital role in supporting the other. The growth that occurs in your maturity will be the most beneficial for those with whom you participate interdependently. The body will therefore mature organically.
3. God’s Sovereign Authority in the design of the Body by the placement of its members 18-20
[18] But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. [19] If all were a single member, where would the body be? [20] As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
Each of you! God has carefully molded you to fit perfectly in the place He designed you for as one diverse part of a unified body. (Eph. 2:8-10) It is through faith that we recognize the grace of God for Salvation and are therefore justified. But that justification leads us to continue to place our faith in Christ concerning Sanctification that is Christ’s workmanship being wrought in us to produce good works through us and ultimately Glorification as Christ completes His work in us.
If we keep in mind that God is developing the Body of Christ for His Glory, we will be confident I His perfect Choices and find pleasure in our role for the benefit of others.
C. Many Members Same Care Suffering Honor Rejoicing 21-26
1. Each Member is necessary for the proper function of the Body 21
[21] The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.”
a. I cannot say that one of you are useless
b. You cannot say that another member has no place here
c. Each one of us as members of the one body were placed here by God
d. God has placed you here for a specific function
2. Recognition of each member and their importance22-24
[22] On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, [23] and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, [24] which our more presentable parts do not require.
a. The usefulness of the weaker members 22
*weakened by sin – to deal with it
*weak in maturity – to be perfected in faith
b. Every member is honored 23a
c. Every member is conducted in modesty 23b-24a
3. The value of every member is determined by God not the other members (24b – 25)
But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, [25] that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.
a. The Beauty of the Divine Composition of the Body of Christ 24b
b. The Body of Christ Tempered by the hand of God
24b – 25a
1. Having a specified temper or disposition. Often used in combination:
2. Adjusted or attuned by the addition of a counterbalancing element; moderated or measured:
3. Made appropriately hard or flexible by tempering: a sword of tempered steel.
4. Having the requisite degree of hardness or elasticity. Used of glass or a metal.
5. Music Tuned to temperament. Used of a scale, an interval, semitone, or intonation.
c. The God ordained unity in the Body of Christ 25
d. Personal divisions are divisions 25
*Personal responsibility
*Proper care fort others
4. Each member owes the other nothing but LOVE 26
[26] If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
a. Who is suffering today? Today suffer with them
b. Are there any among you that has received honor? Today we celebrate together because one of our members is honorable.
There is no doubt that you will have experiences as individuals.
Some individuals will be incredible spiritual experiences directly from the Spirit of God.
Some individuals will overcome strongholds that have kept you in bondage for years.
Some individuals will have great success, in your relationships family friends, in ministry, in your career.
Some individuals are going to experience a dry season in your faith.
Some individuals will suffer moral failure.
Some individuals will suffer loss, in some area of your life, family, friends, ministry, career ect…
When individual members of the Body of Christ experience such pains or such joys, in some way it becomes the experience of the entire body.
Oh! The consideration we are to take in our care for each other. If we would only be aware that our actions and experiences have consequences for the entire body of Christ.
If you are suffering please connect with one of use, it will be the means of your comfort and the Body will be strengthened.
If you fail morally, in fact if you are living in sin right not, please come receive correction, and restoration. Don’t let it go on any longer. Discipline is a means to perfect, (that is bring to maturity) the body of Christ.
And by all means if you have a joy, if you have experienced some tremendous blessing, please share it with us. We need to rejoice with you. For the Joy of the Lord is our Strength. Indeed the Body of Christ should be defined by Joy. We are His, Christ’s!
Does not the Gospel sum this up perfectly?
Jesus Christ, the Savior of the Body, came in the flesh to live in perfect righteousness, to suffer and die for the sin, (The Moral failure) of His people, for the joy set before Him.
His perfect work in you for the Glory of God brings Jesus pure Joy.
