Keep your eyes peeled for freeloaders, Laziness, the wicked, and the abominable.
Proverbs 6:1-35 (ESV)
My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
have given your pledge for a stranger,
[2] if you are snared in the words of your mouth,
caught in the words of your mouth,
[3] then do this, my son, and save yourself,
for you have come into the hand of your neighbor:
go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor.
[4] Give your eyes no sleep
and your eyelids no slumber;
[5] save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
Listen closely to this continuous thought of warning, danger, and wise response, The father teaches his son concerning those he would enter into an agreement with or for.
Here is practical wisdom some of us may wish we would have learned years ago.
But to get wisdom is to begin to apply now!
For you younger, get it early and save much hardship!
“To put up a security for”
What is the parallel in verse one?
“Given your pledge for a stranger”
So we can begin to get understanding regarding the first statement as we think about the second, more clarifying statement.
It’s likely that some here have either done this or had this done for them.
What do we call it today? Co- signing is an example of this security or pledging on behalf of another. Our examples would involve very close relationships indeed relatives themselves mostly.
Give a personal example and the risk that was involved……
What are other examples of this kind of agreement especially relevant in our culture?
The greater danger here is to lend a neighbor a stranger, someone you don’t know, not a clue to trustworthiness or ability satisfy his part of an agreement.
So the thought continues
[2] if you are snared in the words of your mouth,
caught in the words of your mouth,
That is the agreement you have entered into with your mouth, will cause you to be in bondage to your word, the agreement and the one you’ve made the agreement with.
There is a debt to be paid and the one you owe, “on behalf of your neighbor” owns you!
To apply it to our current situation “The one who bales you out owns you, you are his slave”
To be a slave in this context…. explain
Wisdom will not only describe the current situation you have fallen into, but will also prescribe the way out or the remedy to the damage caused.
Listen to it and let’s try and apply it. The same thought here as when we began, it’s one sentence here.
[3] then do this, my son, and save yourself,
for you have come into the hand of your neighbor:
go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor.
[4] Give your eyes no sleep
and your eyelids no slumber;
[5] save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
Generally speaking (remember that’s what the proverbs do “Generally speak”) When we get ourselves into a mess, there is a legitimate way out.
The bottom line though is, it’s gonna take a lot of hard work.
The reason we get into these messes is because somebody didn’t want to do the hard work initially, whether ourselves or a situation we approved of, now to get out will be more difficult, perhaps.
Now a person takes this into consideration when he finds himself in the “hands of his neighbor” work hard and save yourself, or remain in some sort of bondage.
So the prescription here is to get together with your neighbor come up with a plan to pay off the debt and do it, and do it quickly.
The final statement at the end of this continuous thought, reflects the urgency due the danger that approaches. Verse 4-5
[4] Give your eyes no sleep
and your eyelids no slumber;
[5] save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
The impression here is that the wise person will not rest until he is free from these ties. Through honesty, integrity and hard, restless work we can climb out of the pit we have dug, and thrown ourselves into, through lack of wisdom.
I emphasize the hard work here because, what is the alternative?
The alternative is destruction, your done, dead, and trapped in a continuous spiral of death as long as you are owned by another.
Spiritual/yes no? No matter how you slice it, application of the wisdom of God is a spiritual matter, including the hard work of it may be.
Our worst enemy in this context will be laziness whether our own or those around us.
[6] Go to the ant, O sluggard;
consider her ways, and be wise.
[7] Without having any chief,
officer, or ruler,
[8] she prepares her bread in summer
and gathers her food in harvest.
In light of verse 4-5 hard work and diligence will empower progress.
But this enemy “Laziness” effects the opposite, which is ultimately destructions.
The purpose of these proverbs in their practicality is catch our attention before we become lazy or before it’s to late in our laziness.
Here this object lesson.
God says learn from this lower life form low life.
[9] How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
[10] A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
[11] and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man.
Can sleep be a waste of time?
Is it necessary?
We can be just as irresponsible with the lack of sleep as with sleep.
But what we’re talking about here is pure laziness, described by the term sluggard.
Slug illustration
Think for a minute. What are some things that could lead to laziness?
[10] A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
Notice the phrase “a little”.
Sleep, slumber, folding the hands to rest; are these actions wicked in themselves? Rest is actually mandated by God for all human beings, for His Glory and our good!
Can they be dangerous? Yes That is what the writer, and ultimately God, is getting across to those who have ane ear to hear. Those who will get wisdom.
Be very careful in your rest. Rest to the glory of God.
How is that done?
What then is the warning when our rest is not for the Glory of God?
[11] and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man.
Generally speaking, if you’re a lazy bum it’ll show. The consequences of laziness are evident.
Sudden poverty,
Want, lack of necessities to live.
Christian or non-Christian these General principles apply.
In other words you cannot honor Christ with laziness. Hard work on the other hand, as we looked at last week, is pleasing to God as a believer.
Work hard and your rest will be satisfying to you and pleasing to God.
Waste your life as a slug, and sleep will never cure your sense of worthlessness.
Now I do believe there is a thread connecting these proverbs in this sixth chapter.
[12] A worthless person, a wicked man,
goes about with crooked speech,
[13] winks with his eyes, signals with his feet,
points with his finger,
[14] with perverted heart devises evil,
continually sowing discord;
[15] therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;
in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.
I’m going to interpret these next in light of the previous ones.
So I think “ [12] A worthless person, a wicked man” is another description of the sluggard.
If that’s the case think about (the work) as deceptive it is, that the sluggard has to go through to maintain his slothfulness.
Goes about with crooked speech.
What actions does this describe? Lying, conniving, calculating, Thievery, deception in many areas of life.
What if a person had a job, even successful, couyld they still be lazy? How would it play out?
[13] winks with his eyes, signals with his feet,
points with his finger,
What about this winking?
It’s not simply the act of winking. So we do not judge a person simply on a wink. But it is the underhanded plan that the wink signifies. The message the wicked send to each other to cause the righteous to stumble. That they have devised against the innocent or even manipulated the law.
I think it is clarified in the parallel verse that follows.
[14] with perverted heart devises evil,
continually sowing discord;
We’ve heard it said, that the eyes are the window to the soul. That is true! If you want to deal directly with a man/woman, what do you do? You look him in the eye! Liars will often look away. This isn’t again an infallible truth, it, is though a general principle. Wisdom takes into account the character of the man.
The proverb points to the indirect underhandedness of wicked men.
The destiny, unless supernatural intervention by Jesus takes place, is certain.
[15] therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;
in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.
This is the conclusion of the waisted life, the conclusion of the lazy, wicked man. It is grevious. It is necessary for us to examine our selves to see if there is wicked ways in us, Laziness is a wicked way, repentance is necessary, before the Lord.
The Divine attitude toward the wicked
[16] There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
Holy Hatred
Is this just poetic emphasis for God’s displeasure, or is their actually hatred in the Divine Being?
Divine Disgust
Consider for a moment the way God sees the actions of men and men themselves.
When you conceive of God’s disgust in the actions of men, is that consistent with what you’ve been taught concerning God’s Character?
We can conceive of God’s hostility toward the actions of men.
What about disgust that God has toward men themselves? Is this consistent with what you’ve been taught concerning the character of God? Does God actually consider a person an abomination?
Hatred and Sin
Hatred and Holiness
Appropriated Haterd
God Loves and God Hates/ How is this not a contradiction
Before we get into the next verses I want to know what God it is you are professing.
Before the fall
The Fall
Redemption
God’s hatred of hatred
[17] haughty eyes,
Pride in the way you look at another person
Looking with disdain
How despicable you see this other person in their value and significance. The attitude is “you’re nothing to me”
“The pride of a man shows itself in the eyes”
Let me just ask if you can relate?
Pride is a root sin
Romans 12:3 (ESV)
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
James 4:6 (ESV)
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Look with disdain and you will be looked upon with disdain! God hates a proud look, it is an abomination to Him!
It is a hatful thing to deceive other
“a lying tongue,”
You are never more like the Devil than when you lie, for he is the father of lies and of liars.
“a tongue speaking falsehood, knowingly and willingly, with an intention to deceive others; to hurt the character of a neighbour, or to flatter a friend, is a most detestable evil; it ought to be so to men, it must be so to God, who is a God of truth: nor is there anything in which a man more resembles the devil, who is the father of lies” (Gill)
God hates a lying tongue it is an abomination to Him!
It is a hateful thing to murder the innocent
“and hands that shed innocent blood,”
What is involved in the murder of the innocent?
The murder of another human being, unjustly, is an assault against the Creator Himself. It is the innate desire of the enemies of God to destroy those who were created in His image. Murder is Satanic!
God hates the shedding of innocent blood, it is an abomination to Him.
In light of Christ
God hates the wicked actions of men!
[18] a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
The wicked actions of men are an abomination to God
In light of Christ
God hates wicked men
[19] a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.
Wicked men are an abomination to God
In light of Christ
A Father’s instruction on Law in the context of covenant
[20] My son, keep your father’s commandment,
and forsake not your mother’s teaching.
[21] Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
[22] When you walk, they will lead you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
and when you awake, they will talk with you.
[23] For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,
and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
[24] to preserve you from the evil woman,
from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
[25] Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes;
[26] for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread,
but a married woman hunts down a precious life.
[27] Can a man carry fire next to his chest
and his clothes not be burned?
[28] Or can one walk on hot coals
and his feet not be scorched?
[29] So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
none who touches her will go unpunished.
The father’s commandment, the mother’s teaching is not simply every day instructions for minute details actions or tasks. But these instructions concern life and a life style. Instructions based on the Law of God in the context of a covenant.
The Law – What does the Law do? Functionally several things
The Covenant – What is a covenant for? How does it apply to us?
This proverb being based on the law in the context of a covenant, depends a couple of passages we’ll look at, and should be familiar with.
We have covered this to an extent in a previous study. But let’s be refreshed.
To start with look at verse 21
[21] Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
What passage in the Pentateuch (Five Volume Book) Does this verse point to
Particularly Deut. 6:8
So maybe it reminds us of
Deut. 6:8 (ESV)
You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
We remember this as a reference.
The original reader, or hearers, would have remembered the context of that reference. So let’s look at it
Deut. 6:4-15
Touch on some of the elements.
If we could just learn that God reveals His character to His people in the context of a covenant, the grace we have been shown would produce Command obeying love toward Him.
How much more, we who have been saved, since Christ has come!
And Why?
Christ satisfied the just demands of the Law
The New covenant established in His blood/ Go home and read Hebrews
There’s verse 21,
now consider verse 23 for a minute
[23] For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,
and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
where does this verse take your mind, bring to remembrance?
We remember the song right?
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Nun
Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.
Again a view to the Law/Word of God as a revelation of His Character which commands obedience out of Love, in the context of covenant.
Let’s take a look at the rest of this stanza.
NUN Psalm 119:105-112
So we have the Law of God, in our post Cross context. How much more significant should passages like this be for us?
Since there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, the revelation of God’s character through His Law will, not without struggle to be sure, but will produce in us a love that obeys because we know obedience is pleasing to God, from His New Covenant Children.
SO really we have the Law of God, the revelation of God’s Character to His people in the context of covenant, in light of the New Covenant.
OK The rest of this passage in Proverbs 6:20-29, of which 21 and 23 seem to be the key verses.
We have a string of illustrations and word pictures that appropriately apply these key truths to our lives. Let’s just see how light sheds on the practical experiences of life.
The function of vs. 23 in application to verse 24-25
The picture of vs. 26 and it’s result in verse 27
The illustration in verse 28 and it’s relation to vs. 29
Examples of consequences to disobedience
[30] People do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry,
[31] but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold;
he will give all the goods of his house.
[32] He who commits adultery lacks sense;
he who does it destroys himself.
[33] Wounds and dishonor will he get,
and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
[34] For jealousy makes a man furious,
and he will not spare when he takes revenge.
[35] He will accept no compensation;
he will refuse though you multiply gifts.
As His New Covenant people there is a sense in which we ought to recognize God’s Law as Love toward us. His self revelation for our preservation. Therefore love by obedience makes sense not only because he commands, which is good enough reason, but also because we benefit from loving obedience. A theme throughout the scripture concerning our actions is for the Glory of God and the good of His people. The Law in the context of covenant in light of the New Covenant wrought by Christ is for the Glory of God and the good of His people.
Get Wisdom or die!
Proverbs 7:1-27 (ESV)
My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;
[2] keep my commandments and live;
keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;
[3] bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Again the emphasis and value of the Law of God, even the revelation of wisdom
As described in it’s personification
[4] Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call insight your intimate friend,
[5] to keep you from the forbidden woman,
from the adulteress with her smooth words.
Wisdom to be as close/closer than your closest relative
Indeed a friend that is thicker than blood
Purpose of this close relationship
So what? The closer your relationship is to the wisdom of God the greater protection in your circumstances.
This makes sense doesn’t it? For if we obtain wisdom we’ll be more effective using our sense.
What is the outcome of a lack of wisdom? Stupid choices
The lesson here; wisdom will keep you from falling prey to your own lust, which are enticed, by the forbidden nature and inviting fruit of her lips.
Concerning this effect maybe if I use the phrase animated it’ll make a connection. Maybe with women, but especially pronounced in men.
Whatever the stimulus may be, Godly wisdom will provide the ability to resist and or the way of escape. How might this happen?
[6] For at the window of my house
I have looked out through my lattice,
[7] and I have seen among the simple,
I have perceived among the youths,
a young man lacking sense,
[8] passing along the street near her corner,
taking the road to her house
[9] in the twilight, in the evening,
at the time of night and darkness.
Let’s get into this scenario since it is given to us to meditate on.
Four perspectives to think about, Person looking out the window youngster receiving instruction, simple youth on the street, and the adulteress woman.
From the window, what is the experience of this, most likely aged person?
What’s going on with the youngster?
Think about position of the simple youth on the street?
What about this wicked woman?
[10] And behold, the woman meets him,
dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.
This verse reveals a little more about her doesn’t it?
Is she a prostitute? Probably not
It speaks of an even greater depth of depravity, than that of a prostitute.
And we’ve covered in detail this type of description concerning the wicked and destructive nature of such a woman and the end to which a man governed by his lust is lead, in previous studies, let’s just remember here.
[11] She is loud and wayward;
her feet do not stay at home;
[12] now in the street, now in the market,
and at every corner she lies in wait.
[13] She seizes him and kisses him,
and with bold face she says to him,
[14] I had to offer sacrifices,
and today I have paid my vows;
[15] so now I have come out to meet you,
to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.
[16] I have spread my couch with coverings,
colored linens from Egyptian linen;
[17] I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,
aloes, and cinnamon.
[18] Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;
let us delight ourselves with love.
[19] For my husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey;
[20] he took a bag of money with him;
at full moon he will come home.”
[21] With much seductive speech she persuades him;
with her smooth talk she compels him.
[22] All at once he follows her,
as an ox goes to the slaughter,
or as a stag is caught fast
[23] till an arrow pierces its liver;
as a bird rushes into a snare;
he does not know that it will cost him his life.
Now while she will answer for such influence as a temptress and adulteress. Does the young man, therefore get off scot free? I mean it was her ravenous and mischievous nature that led this poor hormone driven youngster into her snare/clutches.!
No! there are no innocent victims here. Just one vicious sinner through sensuous means tempting another willing sinner, who is animated by those means follow after the lust of his own heart. Notice the hardness of the stait forward motion of the heart. No matter what the consequences concerning others or myself, I’m gonna get what I want!
Therefore when justice is served, there is no innocence to be found, therefore only consequence to be paid. Which consequence is death!
[24] And now, O sons, listen to me,
and be attentive to the words of my mouth.
How important is this wisdom being communicated and received”
[25] Let not your heart turn aside to her ways;
do not stray into her paths,
[26] for many a victim has she laid low,
and all her slain are a mighty throng.
How reasonable is the application of such wisdom?
[27] Her house is the way to Sheol,
going down to the chambers of death.
Proverbs 8:1-36 (ESV)
Wisdom is the cry of truth
Does not wisdom call?Does not understanding raise her voice?
[2] On the heights beside the way,
at the crossroads she takes her stand;
[3] beside the gates in front of the town,
at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:
Personification, feminine
What is the picture here?
Wisdom raises her voice at every significant point.
On a hill/high place, not in the wilderness where only trees will hear her
But by the way, the way that people travel.
No matter which direction they travel wisdom cries out. Maybe a few hear, but most will ignore.
Perhaps ignore what, from our study of proverbs so far what does wisdom say to those in the way?
Wisdom stands where the Crossroads intersect. She stands at the crux of every significant decision.
What does she say, what guidance does she give? Let’s list some things we know about wisdoms guidance;
In the midst of significant decisions what would wisdom say the primary goal always? The Glory of God, So Christ is to be exalted in every decision.
Wisdom will never lead you to be deceitful
Never into wickedness, disobedience.
Always in obedience.
Wisdom stands in the position of justice.
When wisdom stands at the gate, righteousness is evident and those who oppose her are blatant.
If we apply wisdom to our judgments they will always be right judgments. Wisdom judges clearly with the mind of Christ. The response of the wicked to such judgments will be blatantly hostile.
In contradistinction those judgments made without wisdom will be evidently foolish. The wise will not give the place of judgment to ignorance but rather to knowledge.
In other words the wise will not make judgments out of ignorance, but rather out of knowledge.
Do we have some learning to do? Learning with the intention application right.
Wisdom is to be present at every economic transaction you find yourselves involved in.
What are some practical portals where we hear her cry from in our lives?
Notice her position; at the entrance. Before you enter into any financial agreement, what is it she is trying to get through to your dull ears?
There is a reason she has to yell. Many times we ignore the consequences she is screaming at us, because we’re gonna get what we want when we want it for whatever immediate gratification we think it will provide.
Our ears are dull to wisdom’s cries, we plug them with covetousness, envy, jealousy, greed, a sense of entitlement, fairness…
What does she cry;
[4] To you, O men, I call,
and my cry is to the children of man.
[5] O simple ones, learn prudence;
O fools, learn sense.
She’s yelling in out dull ear, attempting to penetrate our thick skull, with the message. “Your not as smart as you think you are”
“There is a lot you don’t know about a lot of things”
You don’t know what your getting into, take a step back and look beyond yourself to the wisdom of God”
The first thing you need is sense!
[6] Hear, for I will speak noble things,
and from my lips will come what is right,
[7] for my mouth will utter truth;
wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
[8] All the words of my mouth are righteous;
there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.
[9] They are all straight to him who understands,
and right to those who find knowledge.
The benedictions regarding the nature of wisdom
The malediction concerning her contrary
Wisdom;
Speaks noble things, that which is right
She utters truth
Her words are righteous
Her instructions are strait forward, clear and right (to the wise)
The contrary;
Wickedness is an abomination
Twisted and crooked
Her value is in her beauty
[10] Take my instruction instead of silver,
and knowledge rather than choice gold,
[11] for wisdom is better than jewels,
and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.
Her fruit cannot be bought, it is priceless.
Whatever precious metals and jewels or anything else cannot compare.
Indeed the entire world.
So how is such a precious, priceless, valuable, beautiful possession acquired.
“The Fear of the Lord”
Wisdom is righteous power
[12] I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
and I find knowledge and discretion.
Wisdom and her comparable roomates
Wisdom is surrounded by the characteristics of Smart and careful discipline, awareness.
Ideas or Decisions making based on knowledge
[13] The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil.
Pride and arrogance and the way of evil
and perverted speech I hate.
Wisdom does not tolerate evil rather loathes it
Evil and the heart of man – fallen nature
It is from our hearts that all manner of evil spews forth. The heart in which pride and arrogance finds it’s root.
Pride and arrogance, “sinners in the face of God” I think here we have to realize why such strong words are used. Remember it’s not as if we were born into this world with a clean slate then as time passed and influences come our poor hearts are corrupted and find ruin. No, our hearts are corrupt from birth, and they have been corrupting ever since.
If we think about it like this; if there were wickedness around us, to influence us. We would ourselves produce it.
Therefore perverted speech is the product of an evil heart and the essence of pride and arrogance, that would stand in the face of God and rail obscenities, in his own mind concluding, see I can do and say what I want and God can’t do nothing about it.
This wisdom hates.
Every human heart experiences this reality, so like Jesus said you must be born again. Learn to fear God and to Love God
Wisdom must invade our space and push out pride and arrogance.
If wisdom be in us, we learn to hate such wickedness around us. But I think the emphasis is to be more personal than responding to our judgments about our surroundings, we are to make judgments and respond with the mind of Christ (Wisdom) But the first we must introvert our judgments and deal directly with our own lives beginning with our hearts. As redeemed people we can look with wisdom and loathe the root of the obscenity that proceeds from our own lips Pride and arrogance, and banish them from the sight of wisdom.
How does wisdom accomplish this
[14] I have counsel and sound wisdom;
I have insight; I have strength.
What counsel does wisdom have?
In what ways is wisdom consistent? In it’s assessment of you and the world around you.
Why does wisdom have insight and into what?
What makes wisdom so strong and can we draw on her strength?
Examples of wisdom in leadership
[15] By me kings reign,
and rulers decree what is just;
[16] by me princes rule,
and nobles, all who govern justly.
What is the difference between a ruler/leader that leads with or without wisdom?
[17] I love those who love me,
and those who seek me diligently find me.
The closeness and the clearness of communication
These examples of the relationship between wisdom and those who love seek and find her.
[18] Riches and honor are with me,
enduring wealth and
righteousness.
[19] My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold,
and my yield than choice silver.
[20] I walk in the way of righteousness,
in the paths of justice,
[21] granting an inheritance to those who love me,
and filling their treasuries.
These words describing the valuable and honorable are coupled together for a purpose.
Riches can be gained in many underhanded ways
But riches gained with wisdom also finds honor
It lasts because it was gained properly and with integrity.
It becomes not so much the wealth that is gained that is of ultimate value but the manner in which it was gained.
Gold and silver become less valuable than dung in the grand scheme of things.
Wisdom’s fruit becomes precious and exceedingly more valuable than the treasure itself.
There is no secret to seeking and finding wisdom. What is necessary is the willingness to do so and to do so diligently.
[20] I walk in the way of righteousness,
in the paths of justice,
[21] granting an inheritance to those who love me,
and filling their treasuries.
If you are willing to walk in righteousness, the way of justice guess what you’ll find there? Wisdom
What will be produced? An inheritance, full treasuries
See it’s our value system that is so skewed. What do we consider valuable. What we usually consider valuable is actually just fodder that will perish, burned up with the rest of the world.
Wisdom becomes the most valuable treasure and possession you can seek and attain.
And it begins where?
Wisdom is a divine attribute
I. Wisdom preceded creation
[22] ” The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of old.
[23] Ages ago I was set up,
at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
In the planning of it
When it was carried out
Was there ever a point where God’s wisdom was not with Him? No
II. Wisdom in the creation of the world
[24] When there were no depths I was brought forth,
when there were no springs abounding with water.
The application of God’s wisdom
[25] Before the mountains had been shaped,
before the hills, I was brought forth,
[26] before he had made the earth with its fields,
or the first of the dust of the world.
The application of God’s wisdom
[27] When he established the heavens, I was there;
when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
[28] when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
[29] when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
Wisdom involved: Isaiah 40
III. Wisdom delighting in the creation and sustaining of man
[30] then I was beside him, like a master workman,
and I was daily his delight,
rejoicing before him always,
[31] rejoicing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the children of man.
God delights in His wisdom
Wisdom rejoices
Wisdom delights
Wisdom is hearing instruction
[32] And now, O sons, listen to me:
blessed are those who keep my ways.
[33] Hear instruction and be wise,
and do not neglect it.
[34] Blessed is the one who listens to me,
watching daily at my gates,
waiting beside my doors.
[35] For whoever finds me finds life
and obtains favor from the Lord,
[36] but he who fails to find me injures himself;
all who hate me love death.”
Two Compelling Invitations
Proverbs 9:1-18 (ESV)
I. The strength of wisdom produced a life of Joy 1-6
[1] Wisdom has built her house;she has hewn her seven pillars.
[2] She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine;
she has also set her table.
[3] She has sent out her young women to call
from the highest places in the town,
[4] “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
To him who lacks sense she says,
[5] “Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
[6] Leave your simple ways, and live,
and walk in the way of insight.”
Wisdom: Personified/feminine
The security found in the wisdom of God 1
Providence is found there 2
Joy is produced 2
All who fear God are invited to sit and eat and live 3-6
Wisdoms handmaidens: personified/feminine
Sent out on behalf of wisdom to invite the simple to enter into depth and strength.
Describe the simple person and Describe the basis of this invitation that would be attractive, in a wholesome manner.
- a public display of love 3
- a personal display of mercy 4
- a beautiful display of grace 5
- a pristine display of virtue 6
II. Applying wisdom in instruction
[7] Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse,
and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.
[8] Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
[9] Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
Those who get wisdom are privileged to give instruction
A wise person recognizes the responsibility of that privilege and does not waist the pearls entrusted to him by God, by casting them to swine.
To attempt to correct a scoffer, is not wise but an act of stupidity.
Jesus spoke of this way of wisdom in Matthew 7:6 (ESV)
“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.
The context of judgment, hypocrisy and removing the log to see clearly
Attempting to instruct a man who mocks God means you yourself are blind and without knowledge.
However, the opportunity, to be wise by instructing those who have wisdom is a most profitable endeavor for the Kingdom of God and His Glory.
- He will love you
- He is teachable
- He will gain wisdom
- He will increase in learning
III. Fearing the Lord and knowing His will
[10] The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
[11] For by me your days will be multiplied,
and years will be added to your life.
[12] If you are wise, you are wise for yourself;
if you scoff, you alone will bear it.
Fear of the Lord is the place to start
No fear, No understanding
Fear, you understand
Live wise and your life will be full
Wisdom will benefit you
As a mocker, though there are many, you will stand alone, the consequences will indeed decimate you.
IV. The obnoxious way of folly is a sensuous life that leads to death
[13] The woman Folly is loud;
she is seductive and knows nothing.
[14] She sits at the door of her house;
she takes a seat on the highest places of the town,
[15] calling to those who pass by,
who are going straight on their way,
[16] “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
And to him who lacks sense she says,
[17] “Stolen water is sweet,
and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
[18] But he does not know that the dead are there,
that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.
Folly’s description : stupidity
Loud: clamorous, obtrusive, obnoxious
Seductive: an appeal to remain in the dark, ignorance is bliss. Being without knowledge gives a false sense of security from being held accountable. “Who could be held accountable for what you don’t know, right” Wrong! It is the nature of seduction to lead astray.
If you are led astray, it is your fault. Be sure the seducer will be held accountable, but so will the one being seduced. Folly as a product of her seduction breeds fools.
Let’s describe folly’s invitation;
-She does her seducing alone 14-15
-She seduces the simple 16
-She welcomes all who are ignorant 16
-She invites participation in illicit activity promising satisfaction 17
-she delivers death
The man who is seduced by Folly will be awakened to the reality that many have entered the same way. For him, as for them, it is to late.
Proverbs 10:1-32 (ESV)
The proverbs of Solomon.
The pleasant nature of responsibility in that it produces Gladness contrasted with the stench of laziness as it produces sorrow.
1-5
[1] A wise son makes a glad father,
but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
The first signs of wisdom a father sees in a son.
Listen and apply the words of his father!
Generally speaking, a parent deserves the respect of their children, due to experience and care.
This is not simply “do what you are told” scenarios
But rather take the practical tools of Biblical authority, Godliness, reason use them in all you do. In relationships, education, career plans, choices ect. Conclusions derived from wisdom.
This is wisdom – Solomon pleased His father David when He took the throne and sought the wisdom if God to lead His people.
Seek the wisdom of God in everything you do. Not one element is too small of a thing to seek God’s wisdom in the deployment of it.
Wonder why the choice by Solomon to use father in relation to gladness and mother concerning sorrow?
Perhaps in general the stern strong character of a father reflects a difficulty in pleasing. It’s hard to please a dad sometimes. A father should have the highest expectations of his son. A son should strive to meet those expectations. It is good for both of them.
But a godly father will not only be pleased, but have exceeding great joy when he recognizes his son making choices and living in a way that obviously depends on the wisdom of God.
On the other hand the tender and nurturing character of a mother, every ounce of her energy has gone into his care from conception on, (she) responds in sorrow as she looks on and watches foolish decisions destroy her own flesh and blood.
Sorrow, a ripping apart of her own soul brought to anguish, because though she wants to, there is nothing she can do about it.
Though the writer probably chose each parent in relation to the intensity of their nature; when your own child succeeds in accomplishing great things by God’s wisdom both dad and mom experience great gladness. When a child rejects God’s wisdom, choosing to lean on their own understanding, both watching parents weep.
[2] Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,
but righteousness delivers from death.
In the general understanding of this proverb, how do we judge the world around us in relation to it?
Take the first line of it.
“Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit”
Does this say that the wicked do not gain treasures? No!
The proverb has to it an ultimate sense, in the reality of this world and reality that will come when it is judged.
Think through this with me for awhile.
What is the answer to the question of the frustrated prophet who looks at a nation who despises God sees plenty and cries out “Why do the wicked prosper?”
Jeremiah 12:1 (ESV)
Righteous are you, O Lord, when I complain to you;
yet I would plead my case before you.
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
Why do all who are treacherous thrive?
Job 12:6 (ESV)
The tents of robbers are at peace,
and those who provoke God are secure,
who bring their god in their hand.
(Psalm 37:1,7; 92:7)
Psalm 37:1 (ESV)
Of David.
Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
be not envious of wrongdoers!
Habakkuk 1:13 (ESV)
You who are of purer eyes than to see evil
and cannot look at wrong,
why do you idly look at traitors
and are silent when the wicked swallows up
the man more righteous than he?
Malachi 3:15 (ESV)
And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’ ”
We can look at the response God graciously gave these men.
Let’s take a look at the second line of verse 2,
“but righteousness delivers from death.”
there is a sense in which a righteous Character and righteous actions will sometimes save your life, maybe keep you out of harms way. But your still gonna die.
As fallen people our most righteous deeds by our judgment are by the judgment of God filthy rags, and indeed sinful “coram deo” that which is done apart from faith is sin.
However “the Just shall live by faith” it is by this faith alone in The righteousness of Christ alone according to the scripture alone, that we are justified before the face of God. Therefore those works we do in faith are for the Glory of God alone. The outcome is that we are transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of His marvelous light.
So biblically what righteousness delivers from death? The righteousness of God, found in His Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
We can approach this third proverb of chapter 10 in a similar fashion as we did the second.
[3] The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,
but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
Remember the end of our study last week I asked. Now do faithful followers of Christ suffer hunger and even die from starvation?
So if they do, at times, does that mean God is a liar? God forbid! Therefore there is obviously lack of understanding in our interpretation.
Now I’ve talked about this genre of Hebrew literature (Proverb), how are we supposed to understand this. What is the correct interpretation? You should not start with the words “to me”!
This is a general principal. If you’re lifestyle is “above board” on a horizontal level, generally the providence of God will meet your most basic needs. Work hard with the tools god has given you, do it with integrity, generally you will receive providential benefits.
That would be the correct interpretation of this Proverb.
Now just for clarity, what would a misinterpretation look like?
What if we interpreted it like a promise? It simply would not coincide with reality. And the longer you study the word of God and he develops your thinking you realize, what the Bible reveals about reality is absolutely accurate. His promises are absolute, His wisdom revealed through general principles are perfectly accurate in their assessment of the way things are “Generally”
Let’s interpret it another inaccurate way. “The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry”
Now let’s put the emphasis on righteousness. What would be the problem if we understood this to mean vertical righteousness, of our own, before God?
Then this Proverb would speak to none of us, even in a general sense. Why? Because of an absolute truth that is applied to every son of Adam, since creation due to the fall. Romans 3
So there is again a little lesson on interpreting scripture according to the type of literature you’re dealing with. Remember there is always only one correct interpretation.
However after you have properly interpreted a passage There are many applications that can be drawn from it appropriately.
So in our interpretation we discover the general principal that the Lord does not let the righteous go hungry.
There can be many applications pulled from this principle.
* It shows a maturity in faith to be satisfied with the providence of God no matter the circumstances.
Consider Paul; Where was Paul when he wrote Philippians?
Philip. 4:10-13 (ESV)
I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. [11] Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. [12] I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. [13] I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
* Application concerning the righteousness of Christ
There is a real sense that because you are in Christ, what ever you seem to lack here in comparison to your inheritance, it doesn’t even begin to register. In fact we could apply this in contrast concerning the suffering of God’s people. Even in preparation for what we may face in our future.
Romans 8:12-25 (ESV)
So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. [13] For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. [14] For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. [15] For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” [16] The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, [17] and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
[18] For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. [19] For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. [20] For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope [21] that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. [22] For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. [23] And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. [24] For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? [25] But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
The point is in light of God’s revelation, when all is said and done those who are in Christ will not be lacking and we can be confident of it!
Ok the second line of verse 3
but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
Principally speaking the wicked are not satisfied with the wickedness the do. If the sin we commit actually satisfied the ungodly cravings that we have we would not continue in sin. However, the essence of sin is the lie. It always promises more than it is able to deliver.
Don’t misunderstand here, I’m not saying that there is no gratification in sin, there is a specific, immediate gratification. But it is always temporary and lacking in the fulfillment in led you to believe it could provide.
God has created us to crave. Our craving can be done to the Glory of God. That built in craving can only be satisfied by the One who is exceedingly satisfying. Jesus Christ!
Augustine described that craving as restlessness when He said;
“Great art Thou, O Lord, and greatly to be praised; great is Thy power, and of Thy wisdom there is no end. And man, being a part of Thy creation, desires to praise Thee, man, who bears about with him his mortality, the witness of his sin, even the witness that Thou “resistest the proud, ” – yet man, this part of Thy creation, desires to praise Thee. Thou movest us to delight in praising Thee; for Thou hast formed us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless till they find rest in Thee. Lord, teach me to know and understand which of these should be first, to call on Thee, or to praise Thee; and likewise to know Thee, or to call upon Thee.
Oh! how shall I find rest in Thee? Who will send Thee into my heart to inebriate it, that I may forget my woes, and embrace Thee my only good? What art Thou to me? Have compassion on me, that I may speak. What am I to Thee that Thou demandest my love, and unless I give it Thee art angry, and threatenest me with great sorrows? Is it, then, a light sorrow not to love Thee? Alas! alas! tell me of Thy compassion, O Lord my God, what Thou art to me. “Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.” So speak that I may hear. Behold, Lord, the ears of my heart are before Thee; open Thou them, and “say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.” When I hear, may I run and lay hold on Thee. Hide not Thy face from me. Let me die, lest I die, if only I may see Thy face.” St. Augustine of Hippo, Confessions, 1,1.5
Strike with diligence or be stricken with poverty 10:4-9
[4] A slack hand causes poverty,
but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
To work beneath your abilities
To fail to accomplish what is required, because of negligence, slothfulness
Could also apply to working with a deceitful hand.
The trouble a person goes through to look as if he is accomplishing something, when in reality it’s just a show, the task isn’t being completed up to par.
Working for package deal…
The diligent worker, however, produces.
Works hard for an income and prospers with a confident conscience.
Both lines of this proverb can be applied in two very significant ways.
That is a slacker is sure, not to only damage his own livelihood, but everyone who depends on him to do his job.
Examples……
The diligent, trustworthy, laborer earns his wage, can sleep at night, because his conscience is clear before His God. Plus his diligence has benefited and made successful all those who have depended on him to do his job. They’ve discovered that he’s done it well.
Examples of relationships effected…..
One such relationship is our influence on our children. The positive and negative effects can be very lasting
We can certainly remember, from our own experience, the seasons of laziness in our youth. I think the influence of our parents and therefore our influence on our children will show, not if they go through this experience or not but how they respond when they do.
If we learn and therefore teach by our actions laziness, our children will have a sense of comfort in their own slothful experiences.
However, If we’ve learned and therefore teach by example diligence, when our children do go through their slothful periods, they will experience a sense of discomfort, and recognize their laziness is not OK!
[5] He who gathers in summer is a prudent son,
but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.
When we see this played out in their lives, preparation, hard work, consistent diligence, put forth because they know it will pay off later, we recognize maturity and even wisdom. I think it would be important if they knew we recognized that. These things should please us and do please God as His children.
When we witness the contrary, the lack of preparation, when you see them procrastinate, or just flat out refuse to do the work necessary today for what is coming tomorrow. They need to know that this lack of responsibility is shameful. They also ought to know this because, we have taught them that these things are shameful and disappointing to us and to God.
To make angry or to disappoint. There is a greater depth of emotion experienced when you disappoint someone who you know loves you.
Diligence is a spiritual pursuit
This applies most seriously to spiritual matters. Lack of spiritual discipline, diligence in our pursuit of God and white hot desire to please Him in Christ through fervent prayer and constant study of His word for life.
It is here in spiritual matters of discipline that will actually bring lasting value out of those earthly pursuits, they will be accomplished as unto the Lord, For His Glory. Whatever is accomplished for the Glory of God will have eternal significance,
Therefore, as those who have been made spiritually alive by the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit because of the satisfying work of The Son on behalf of His people for the Glory of God, everything we engage in becomes a spiritual matter.
The unregenerate however, being dead in trespasses and sin, without the ability, nay even the desire, to do anything for the pleasure of god, do continue to work nothing but wickedness. Everything the unregenerate engage in becomes worthy of nothing but wrath.
This reality is revealed in the wisdom of God and is seen clearly in these general statements. When we meditate on these proverbs, and judge ourselves and the world around us by them they reveal reality and teach us how to understand and respond to reality.
[6] Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
[7] The memory of the righteous is a blessing,
but the name of the wicked will rot.
[8] The wise of heart will receive commandments,
but a babbling fool will come to ruin.
[9] Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.
Friends our pursuit in Christ is to be identified and identify the first line of each of these proverbs. Thereby recognizing and shunning the second.
[10] Whoever winks the eye causes trouble,
but a babbling fool will come to ruin.
A person who devises plans in secret with another
The one winking and the one being winked at are in on it
or
An invitation to participate in an underhanded event
Beware of persons of this Character trouble is nearby
A person who gives away information he should not trusted
[11] The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
There are so many ways we can appropriately build each other up, the righteous make this a habit
Let’s practice
Wicked plans are built up in the heart, the mind construes all sorts of ideas.
Malicious thoughts remain concealed until the most hurtful opportunity arises. It is then that the wicked strike.
We will not practice this. I fear we are well prepared in this area.
But how may examples play out.
[12] Hatred stirs up strife,
but love covers all offenses.
It is a sin to hate someone else/ from Jesus’ perspective, and it ought to be ours, the one who hates his brother is guilty of murder.
The scriptures reveal that murder is in our hearts as fallen human beings. It is our nature.
Romans 3:13 (ESV)
“Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
It is indeed the Spirit of God who restrains not only the believer but all men.
It is out of such hearts that all manner of strife is stirred up
This is what we have to war against when the desire to raise from the dead an issue that has been a long time and happily buried. To re-inflict pain, to re-introduce trouble.
But Love, the proverb says, covers all offences
1 Peter 4:8 and its context
Not our own sins but the failures of others.
We are not to approve of sin or sinful lifestyles. But we are to bear with one another. We are to forgive each other.
But the question we may have is How?
First of all this act of love is supernatural. The natural man does not have the knowledge or ability to practice this forgiving love.
As His people we are to look to Him for proper understanding and practice.
Ephesians 4:32Again the context of this verse gives us proper understanding and practice of such love.
[13] On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found,
but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense.
[14] The wise lay up knowledge,
but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.
What does your mouth prove?
You’ve got a mind use it!
Understanding from god concerning things from the perspective of His revelation
Like what?
How is this knowledge gained?
From the knowledge of God comes wisdom.
Of course the clearest and best revelation is in Jesus Christ the Son of God, full of grace and truth.
On the other hand to be without knowledge is detrimental.
Discipline/chastisement is implemented by God through the means of circumstances, to the end of being kept from ruin.
The unrepentant fool will be brought to destruction by the fruit of his lips.
[15] A rich man’s wealth is his strong city;
the poverty of the poor is their ruin.
[16] The wage of the righteous leads to life,
the gain of the wicked to sin.
[17] Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,
but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
Morality and money
Wealth
Providence from God. Useful for much good. To provide for others.
Such as:
But then there is trusting in riches. This will always fail a person. You will be found wanting if trust is in money.
When it or you are taken which ever comes first, the experience is destruction. Safety removed and no comfort found in the presence of a holy God.
Financial poverty makes it very difficult to survive. Many times they see life as in ruin.
Or those who lose everything interpret their life as coming to ruin, “All is lost”
There are a number of ways a person could be impoverished.
The righteous and his gain
The wicked and His
Righteousness = life & heeding instruction life
The gain of the wicked
They despise correction
[18] The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
and whoever utters slander is a fool.
[19] When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
Discernment on speaking
[20] The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
the heart of the wicked is of little worth.
[21] The lips of the righteous feed many,
but fools die for lack of sense.
[22] The blessing of the Lord makes rich,
and he adds no sorrow with it.
What is to be valued?
What is to be despised
[23] Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool,
but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.
[24] What the wicked dreads will come upon him,
but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
[25] When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more,
but the righteous is established forever.
[26] Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
so is the sluggard to those who send him.
The pleasure of wisdom
The disdain of the foolish
[27] The fear of the Lord prolongs life,
but the years of the wicked will be short.
[28] The hope of the righteous brings joy,
but the expectation of the wicked will perish.
[29] The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the blameless,
but destruction to evildoers.
[30] The righteous will never be removed,
but the wicked will not dwell in the land.
[31] The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,
but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
[32] The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable,
but the mouth of the wicked, what is perverse.
The life giving result of properly placed fear
The death producing announcements of the perverse
